Desktop DAC/AMP with all the power and technology you need to put you at the forefront of headphone audio.

FiiO arrives at Et Sona and makes a strong statement. The K19, its most advanced offering in the desktop segment, is a clear declaration of intent: technical capability, design, excellent performance, and a high-end execution. We thank the importer for Spain, Zococity , for providing this unit for in-depth evaluation. Let's get down to business.

The K19 is configured as an integrated system, composed of 2 elements: on the one hand, a high-performance DAC based on ESS technology and, on the other, a headphone amplification section with high power delivery and control, even under demanding loads.

The design is rounded out by an industrial aesthetic that blends presence and functionality. The chassis conveys a sense of solidity, the finishes are meticulously executed, and the overall impression is of a mature product, conceived with careful attention to both engineering and aesthetic detail. Its presence on the desk is undoubtedly striking and admirable. A success in both aesthetic and technological terms, but let's delve a little deeper.

Construction

The FiiO K19 comes in a desktop format with a robust and well-structured design that also has a small footprint for easy placement in your workspace. The metal chassis provides rigidity and stability, with a clean and well-executed finish. Installation accessories include metal, well-finished support feet and a plastic stand that attaches to the top of the unit and doubles as a headphone stand.

On the other hand, the user-friendly front-facing controls, the integrated information and navigation screen, and the rear connections all reflect a practical approach, facilitating access and integration. In my case, I only needed two cables: a power cable and a USB-C cable from my computer, which also served as the power source.

The front panel, as I mentioned, houses an information screen. While small, I have no complaints, as it's relatively easy to read and a pleasant addition to the setup when the device is within easy reach. Together with the precise, solid-feel physical controls, it allows you to manage volume, inputs, and settings. The feel in use is direct and firm, in keeping with the device's positioning. The RGB LED lighting not only serves an aesthetic purpose; the color codes indicate the playback frequency of the file, while also adding a touch of vibrancy to the environment.

The rear panel offers a multitude of connectivity options. These include HDMI ARC inputs (for connecting to a monitor or game console), USB-C, as well as coaxial and Toslink inputs (allowing you to take advantage of the unit's excellent DAC for CD playback, for example). There are also two analog outputs (2xRCA and XLR). I do miss at least one analog input, as I haven't been able to use the unit to listen to, for example, my turntable through headphones.

The K19 integrates an ESS DAC chip, optimized for precise conversion with low noise and high resolution. Its implementation is geared towards maximizing signal stability and tonal coherence. The result is a slightly clinical and deeply detailed sound, aimed at users who prioritize clarity. In practice, however, the sound profile can be altered using the unit's EQ and filter options.

To give you an idea of the K19's impressive specifications, the PEQ (Parametric EQ) offers 31 bands of adjustment without any loss of information or sound quality. It can even be configured from a computer or mobile device, providing impressive depth and range of control. Furthermore, the ESS9039 SPRO chip operates on 8 channels with virtually nonexistent noise levels (-122 dB) and a first-rate dynamic range (132 dB), guaranteeing maximum sound quality and zero audible noise and interference during listening. It's no wonder we're talking about the brand's flagship model, a brand renowned for using high-quality components.

The headphone amplifier section stands out for its current delivery capacity. The design allows it to handle everything from sensitive IEMs to high-impedance headphones with authority, maintaining dynamic control and stability across the entire volume range. The integration of both sections into a single chassis follows an internal coherence logic, where the signal flow remains optimized and free from external interference. It's a THX AAA 788+ certified model, again with an 8-channel implementation (for pairing with the DAC) and a power output of up to 8000mW with 32Ω loads. In short, it can handle any headphones you have at hand.

Overall, the design, build quality, and finish are more than in line with the price range of the device, giving it a very solid feel and ease of use, not to mention how pleasing it is to the touch and eye, which earns it many points. Personally, I would have chosen the black finish, not silver, but the demo unit came in that color, and hey, it doesn't look bad at all.

How does it sound?

Let's do a brief, necessary review of the associated equipment: Current treatment: Lampizator Silk

Power cables: BAZCO Audio L2 Power .

Source: MacBook Pro / Roon / Qobuz

Interconnect cable: USB-C supplied by the manufacturer

Headphones: Sennheiser HD 660S2 & 490 PRO PLUS

Headphone Cable: Arachne Audio

We briefly warmed up the engines and took to the track, as all the system components were properly broken in and ready to go. Right away, through the HD660S2 headphones, we noticed great detail and authority in the musical presentation, listening to a sample of Ícaro by Alex Olmedo and Fiona Mato (IBS Classical). This cello and piano duo, like the rest of the FiiO recordings, provides an excellent platform for evaluating high-fidelity equipment. The presentation, textures, and harmonics of both instruments were impressively detailed. The K19 delivers ample power to the HD660S2 headphones effortlessly, achieving a more than satisfactory listening level. Even at low volumes, it does a good job of delivering detail and clarity, which speaks to good power management, quality components, and careful architecture by FiiO. This listening session was conducted using the 6.3mm output of the system.

Moving on to the HD490 PRO PLUS, we shift slightly in musical genre, as well as output, now using the balanced XLR output thanks to the connector on our cable, courtesy of Arachne Audio . With a bit more gain and a noticeable improvement in detail and balance, Libro Primo by Rolf Lislevand, an ECM recording, delivers a masterclass in string instruments and the ability to appreciate the transients that reflect attentive listening to this genre of instrument in a high-quality recording. Detail and depth in a well-defined, three-dimensional soundstage. The focus on the instrument is clear and with ample detail.

Finally, testing with IEMs, again from the XLR output, L'Amour et la Mort - Hermine May & Manuel Lange , this time from MDG, we appreciated the great clarity and spectacular tonality of May's voice. An organic texture and presentation, beautifully framed by the piano background and an outstanding performance from the mezzo-soprano. The quality of the K19's amplification surprised us and made us acknowledge its quality, as the high sensitivity of the IEMs meant that we didn't perceive any hum or annoying noises extraneous to the musical presentation, but rather added great detail to the music.

Testing the various filters applicable to the ESS chip, we noticed noticeable variations in the tonality of the music. Personally, I prefer a more neutral approach (I'm not a big fan of EQ or filters). However, I must admit that some users will find this feature more beneficial.

To briefly conclude, I can say that the FiiO K19's sound strikes a balance between resolution, control, and musicality. The bass is firm and extended, with a solid foundation that provides structure and an excellent base for musical presentation without overpowering the rest of the spectrum. The amplification section's capabilities allow for control even in complex passages, with good layering and more than enough power for any demand the average user might have.

The midrange is clear and present. Vocals are reproduced naturally and with good articulation, while instruments maintain texture and definition. The transition between registers is smooth, promoting a coherent and appreciative listening experience that highlights detail and depth.

The treble offers extension and detail, providing ample information without being intrusive. The DAC's resolution translates into micro-detail and a sense of spaciousness, contributing to an open soundstage. The soundstage is wide and well-organized. Element placement is stable, with clear separation and an image that maintains consistency even in dense recordings. The K19 adapts easily to different headphone profiles. With IEMs, it maintains background control and precision, while with more demanding headphones, it demonstrates punch and dynamic range.

Technical data

Conclusions

The FiiO K19 positions itself as a complete system that combines high-resolution digital conversion and powerful amplification in a single, well-executed chassis. Its construction, internal architecture, and sonic performance reflect a mature development geared towards real-world use. Without a doubt, it is a top-of-the-line audiophile-grade system and an absolute benchmark.

To say that the power and sound quality of the K19 didn't surprise me would be a lie. And lying is a sin, I'm told. So yes, I admit my complete and utter surprise in both respects, and I certainly have no objection to recommending the FiiO K19 to anyone who asks my opinion as an excellent and outstanding DAC/AMP, probably one of the best I've heard in this price range.

The combination of control, clarity, and dynamic range makes it a versatile tool for both critical listening and everyday use. Within its category, the K19 represents a solid, coherent, and technically competent offering. Priced around €1,100, while not exactly budget-friendly, it offers excellent value for money and relative accessibility, allowing regular headphone users to experience top-tier quality with the backing of a renowned brand like FiiO.
